The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya started this programme when in 2008, Prof. C. V. Ramakrishnan donated all his family savings in memory of his wife, Prof. Rajalakshmi, who was active in mission activities and cared for education of poor. Their old students and friends also donated for this programme and an endowment was created. Every year the annual interest of the endowment is utilized to select poor students to do 5-year college education in the field where they have aptitude (preference will be given to girls). The children are selected on a secular basis. The criteria for selection is that he/she should be the first in the family to attend college. The selected children will be given fees, free boarding and lodging, clothes, books and expenses to visit parents during vacation. Donations for this programme is tax-exempt both in India (under section 80G) and USA (under section 501<c><3> of the IRS code). One-time donation of 1.5 lakh rupees or 2500 dollars will help to select one child at a time, i.e., when one child finishes the programme, another child can be selected. Along with the donation, donors are requested to send a note that the donation is for “Coimbatore Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya” for their “5-year College Education Project For Poor Children”.
